Thanking Others.

April 2, 2011

Last night I finished reading Michelle’s Golden’s Book, Social Media Strategies for Professionals and Their Firms. First, I want to say that it is a GREAT read for anyone living in the Accounting or Legal world.  Michelle is a blogger, a consultant and a friend.  As I read the book I smiled as I saw the names of people who I know like Andrew Rose, Eric Majchrzak and Ginger Lewis.  However, it caught me off guard when I got to page 273 and I saw that I was included in the book.  I am incredibly honored. Seeing my name made me smile, but it also made me think about how I don’t do this often enough for others. I know so many great people that I learn from every day, but I am not crediting them enough for the incredible knowledge that they share with me and I don’t thank them enough for helping me learn.

My client and friend, Billy Kirsch is great at this. He has mentioned me several times in his blog with link backs to my site. Billy is knee deep in learning about inbound bound marketing and search engine optimization (SEO), but that’s not why he links to other people. He does it to be nice. He does it to add value to his readers and always seems to tie in his links in a very meaningful way. And yes, he does it for SEO, but that is secondary.

Midori Connolly started a wonderful and personal blog that has nothing to do with business. She spends a lot time letting the people in her life know how important they are to her through her writing.

Kelly McDonald, a good friend and author of How to Market to People Not Like You shares stories of the smart and creative things that her clients have done to serve diverse markets. I can’t think of a better way to thank a client than to put them in your book (which, by the way, is on its way to being a best seller).

These are just a handful of people that know how to say thank you in a meaningful and effective way. I thank them for being great friends and great thought leaders.

Tomorrow I will share with you a handful of blogs that I read and learn from and want to thank the writers for their service. I was going to do it in this post, but I have decided that both lists deserve special attention.

I hope that this post serves as a reminder to be thankful and to let people know that you appreciate their work. If you have a blog and are struggling for content, think about how you can help share what someone else wrote with a link back to their site. Don’t do this for SEO, do it because you care.
