iPad for Mother’s Day? How to Get Her to Keep It.

Turn mom into a techy!

Mother’s Day in Sunday in the U.S. and many friends are considering getting their mother’s iPads, Kindles or other tablets and e-readers. They know that mom will love these modern gifts, but will mom keep them long enough to appreciate them? A number of friends have expressed concern that their heartfelt gestures will end up as store credits redeemable for something much more practical in mom’s opinion.

How can you convince mom that technology is not scary and that, even though mom knows best most of the year, a little faith can go a long way.

Here are seven tips on helping mom enjoy her new toy.

  1. Help her set it up.  Even if you are far away, helping configure tablets ahead of time helps her to enjoy it right out of the box.
  2. Download apps that she will like and show her how to use it. Remember it’s her day so be patient when you demonstrate.
  3. Preload it with her favorite music.
  4. Buy her a few Ebooks to get her started. Many classics are available for free.
  5. Add some family photos to the library and as the wallpaper.
  6. Buy her a “For Dummies” book to go with it. We know mom is very smart, but these books can be very handy.
  7. Get her a custom case that she will want to show her friends.

I will be celebrating mother’s day with some like-a-mom-to-me friends this weekend. I hope that all of you have a wonderful weekend with your families.
